Recombinant human erythropoietin used for the treatment of anaemia associated with chronic kidney disease, chemotherapy and HIV therapy. Helps stimulate red blood cell production and reduce transfusion requirements.

Indications

Indicated for treatment of anaemia due to chronic kidney disease in dialysis and non-dialysis patients, zidovudine-treated HIV patients, chemotherapy-induced anaemia and reduction of allogeneic RBC transfusions in elective noncardiac, nonvascular surgery patients.

Pharmacodynamics

Epoetin alfa is a recombinant glycoprotein that stimulates erythropoiesis by promoting the division and differentiation of erythroid progenitor cells in the bone marrow, leading to increased red blood cell production.

Dosage and administration

CKD Patients: 50–100 Units/kg three times weekly. HIV Patients: 100 Units/kg three times weekly. Chemotherapy Patients: 40,000 Units weekly or 150 Units/kg three times weekly. Surgical Patients: 300 Units/kg daily for 14 days or 600 Units/kg weekly or as directed by the physician.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in uncontrolled hypertension, pure red cell aplasia following erythropoietin therapy, serious allergic reactions and use of multi-dose vials in neonates, infants, pregnant or nursing women.
