Composition

Tablets: Azithromycin 100 mg / 250 mg / 500 mg. Suspension: Azithromycin 100 mg/5 mL and 200 mg/5 mL

Features / Experimentation

Broad-spectrum macrolide antibiotic formulation used for the treatment of respiratory tract, skin and genitourinary bacterial infections. Provides convenient once-daily dosing with effective antibacterial coverage.

Indications

Indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate susceptible infections including respiratory tract infections, uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections, non-gonococcal urethritis and cervicitis.

Pharmacodynamics

Azithromycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, thereby preventing peptide translocation and inhibiting bacterial growth.

Dosage and administration

Adults: 500 mg on Day 1 followed by 250 mg once daily on Days 2–5 for respiratory and skin infections. Non-gonococcal urethritis/cervicitis: Single 1 g dose. Paediatric dosing varies according to indication and body weight or as directed by the physician.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to azithromycin, erythromycin, macrolide or ketolide antibiotics and in patients with a history of cholestatic jaundice or hepatic dysfunction associated with prior azithromycin use.
