Macrolide antibiotic formulation used for the treatment of a wide range of susceptible bacterial infections. Provides broad-spectrum antibacterial activity with convenient once-daily dosing.

Indications

Indicated for susceptible bacterial infections including community-acquired pneumonia and pelvic inflammatory disease.

Pharmacodynamics

Azithromycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, thereby preventing peptide translocation and inhibiting bacterial growth.

Dosage and administration

Total paediatric dosage: 30 mg/kg in children aged 6 months and older. Administer as 10 mg/kg once daily for 3 days or 10 mg/kg on day 1 followed by 5 mg/kg once daily for the next 4 days or as directed by the physician.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to azithromycin, erythromycin, macrolide or ketolide antibiotics and in patients with a history of cholestatic jaundice or hepatic dysfunction associated with prior azithromycin use.
