Composition
Sodium Feredetate 231 mg/5 mL syrup
Features / Experimentation
Oral iron formulation used for the treatment of iron deficiency anaemia. Helps improve haemoglobin synthesis, oxygen transport and replenishment of iron stores.
Indications
Indicated for the treatment and prevention of iron deficiency anaemia in paediatric, adult and elderly patients.
Pharmacodynamics
Sodium Feredetate is an essential component of haemoglobin involved in oxygen transport. It also forms part of myoglobin, the oxygen-storing pigment in muscle tissues, supporting normal erythropoiesis and tissue oxygenation.
Dosage and administration
Children: 3–6 mg/kg/day of elemental iron in 2–3 divided doses (maximum 200 mg/day). Adults: 5 mL gradually increased to 10 mL 2–3 times daily. Elderly: Same as adult dosage or as directed by the physician.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to sodium feredetate or formulation components, haemochromatosis, haemosiderosis and patients receiving repeated blood transfusions or parenteral iron therapy.
