Composition
Each sustained-release tablet contains Metformin Hydrochloride SR 500 mg/1000 mg.
Features / Experimentation
Melmet SR Tablets contain metformin in a sustained-release formulation that provides effective glycaemic control with improved gastrointestinal tolerability and enhanced patient compliance through convenient dosing. As a biguanide antihyperglycaemic agent, metformin lowers blood glucose without stimulating insulin secretion, helping reduce both fasting and postprandial glucose levels. The sustained-release technology ensures gradual drug release, minimizing gastrointestinal side effects while maintaining therapeutic efficacy.
Indications
Melmet SR Tablets are indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycaemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Pharmacodynamics
Metformin is an antihyperglycaemic agent that improves glucose tolerance in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus by lowering both basal and postprandial plasma glucose concentrations. It decreases hepatic glucose production, reduces intestinal absorption of glucose, and enhances peripheral insulin sensitivity by increasing glucose uptake and utilization. The sustained-release formulation provides prolonged drug release, improving gastrointestinal tolerability while maintaining consistent glycaemic control.
Dosage and administration
The usual starting dose is 500 mg twice daily or 850 mg once daily, administered with meals. The dose should be individualized according to glycaemic response and patient tolerability. The sustained-release formulation improves gastrointestinal tolerability and allows convenient once-daily administration where appropriate.
Contraindications
Melmet SR Tablets are contraindicated in patients with renal impairment, metabolic acidosis including diabetic ketoacidosis, and in patients with known hypersensitivity to metformin hydrochloride or any component of the formulation.
