Composition
Each 15 mL syrup contains Lactitol Monohydrate USP 10 g.
Features / Experimentation
Osmitol Syrup contains Lactitol Monohydrate, an osmotic laxative indicated for the treatment of constipation and the prevention of hepatic encephalopathy. It is a synthetic disaccharide that promotes bowel movements by increasing the water content of stools, making them softer and easier to pass. In patients with hepatic encephalopathy, it helps reduce intestinal ammonia production and absorption, thereby lowering blood ammonia levels. Lactitol is minimally absorbed, has a pleasant taste, is generally well tolerated, and has no significant effect on blood glucose levels, making it suitable for patients with diabetes.
Indications
Osmitol Syrup is indicated for the treatment of constipation and for the prevention and management of hepatic encephalopathy.
Pharmacodynamics
Lactitol Monohydrate is a synthetic disaccharide derived from lactose that is minimally absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. In the colon, it is fermented by intestinal bacteria into low-molecular-weight organic acids, which increase the osmotic pressure within the bowel, drawing water into the intestinal lumen and softening stools to facilitate bowel movements. The resulting acidic colonic environment reduces the conversion and absorption of ammonia by promoting its conversion to non-absorbable ammonium ions, thereby helping prevent and manage hepatic encephalopathy. Lactitol provides approximately 2 kcal/g of energy and has minimal impact on blood glucose levels, making it appropriate for diabetic patients.
