Features / Experimentation

Erythropoiesis-stimulating agent used for the management of anaemia associated with chronic kidney disease and chemotherapy-induced anaemia. Helps stimulate red blood cell production and improve haemoglobin levels.

Indications

Indicated for the treatment of anaemia associated with chronic renal failure in dialysis and non-dialysis patients and anaemia associated with chemotherapy in patients with non-myeloid malignancies.

Pharmacodynamics

Darbepoetin alfa stimulates erythropoiesis by promoting the division and differentiation of erythroid progenitor cells in the bone marrow. It binds to erythropoietin receptors, enhancing red blood cell production and release of reticulocytes into circulation.

Dosage and administration

CKD patients on dialysis: 0.45 mcg/kg IV or SC weekly or 0.75 mcg/kg every 2 weeks. CKD patients not on dialysis: 0.45 mcg/kg IV or SC every 4 weeks. Cancer patients on chemotherapy: 2.25 mcg/kg SC weekly or 500 mcg SC every 3 weeks or as directed by the physician.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to Darbepoetin alfa, uncontrolled hypertension and pure red cell aplasia occurring after treatment with erythropoietin agents.
